Transport Canada is the federal department responsible for transportation policy, programs, and regulatory oversight across the air, marine, rail, and road sectors. It sets safety and security standards, oversees infrastructure investments, and administers programs intended to keep the national transportation system functioning. The department works alongside a number of related organizations, including the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, which screens passengers and baggage at airports; the Canadian Transportation Agency, an independent tribunal and regulator for transportation matters; and Crown corporations such as VIA Rail Canada, Marine Atlantic, and the Federal Bridge Corporation, which operate or maintain specific transportation services and infrastructure on the government's behalf.

Transport recorded total spending of $6.02B in the 2024–25 fiscal year, equal to 1.1% of total federal spending. This total spans both the department's direct operations and the Crown corporations and agencies that fall within its portfolio.

The Department of Transport itself accounted for the largest share of spending, followed by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority and VIA Rail Canada Inc.; Marine Atlantic Inc. and the newer VIA HFR – VIA TGF Inc. made up smaller portions of portfolio spending, with the Canadian Transportation Agency and the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited representing the smallest amounts among the named entities. Transfer payments made up a notable part of the department's activity, with the largest directed to the Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles Program. Other transfer payment programs among the largest included the National Trade Corridors Fund, which supports transportation infrastructure projects; the Northumberland Strait Crossing Subsidy Payment; the Airport Critical Infrastructure Program; and the Ferry Services Contribution Program, which supports regional ferry operations.
